Entra ID retires memberOf on 3 November: after that date, membership stops being recalculated

Message centre post MC1448379, published on 5 August, has been read as a deadline. Read it the other way round: if you run a memberOf rule in production, you already have the problem it describes, and the preview documentation says so in a paragraph almost nobody reads. What happens on 3 November is not an outage or an error: memberships stay "in their last known state". That is where licences, Conditional Access and Teams membership hang from.

Azure stops including the VMware licence: the core count nobody does

Two weeks ago we wrote that 31 October 2026 is the end of Azure VMware Solution with the licence included. Microsoft has since published its portable licensing reference, and that is where the counting rules are: how many cores each node type has, why the distributed firewall counts every host in the private cloud even the ones you are not paying for, and which date actually governs your calendar, because it is not the August 2027 one.

5% more for paying monthly: what changes on 1 October, and when not to switch

From 1 October 2026 Microsoft will add a 5% uplift to CSP software subscriptions on annual terms billed monthly: it names Windows Server, SQL Server, CALs and System Center, and leaves the list open. The product does not change; the price of money does. The full arithmetic — that 5% works out at borrowing at roughly 11% a year — why your date is not 1 October but each line's renewal date, and the cases where moving is not worth it.

VMware to Proxmox: your rollback plan expires on its own

Every migration plan has a line that says "if it goes wrong, we roll back". Almost none says what you roll back to, or until when. Proxmox has shipped an ESXi import wizard since 8.2; the way back is not a button. And the window closes from three directions at once: the contract, the unpatched hypervisor, and the data delta.

On 31 October 2026 the Azure VMware Solution model in which the licence came bundled with the node comes to an end: from 1 November you must bring a VMware Cloud Foundation key bought directly from Broadcom. On Google Cloud VMware Engine it already happened on 1 November 2025. Eighty-nine days to go. For two years, "I will just lift my vSphere into the hyperscaler" has been the favourite plan B for not deciding; it was an extension, and extensions expire. The maths you can finish this week, and when staying put is the right call.

Windows 10 and the October toll: ESU doubles every year and you cannot skip year one

Microsoft charges $61 per device for the first year of Windows 10 extended security updates, and its own documentation says two things almost nobody puts together: the price doubles every consecutive year and ESUs are cumulative, so enrolling in year three means paying for all three. Delaying enrolment does not reduce the bill if you end up enrolling: it shifts the payment and leaves you without patches while you wait. The full math, the three blind spots that cost real money (the 2027 headline is not about your company, LTSC is not covered, and Office lives on until 2028 but you can no longer log a bug) and when paying for ESU really is the right call.
